The Free Rider series has been the ultimate favorite for off-piste and on-piste skiers. However, Ortovox believes that the popular backpack can be even better and therefore it has now received upgrades that make it one of the world's best (again) or maybe the world's best.

With the new upgrades Ortovox has focused on 3 things. Comfort, Flexibility and the environment.

The backpack has become even more comfortable to wear as it is made to sit even closer to the back. It gives more control as the backpack sits tightly instead of feeling like it can flutter. The hip strap is optimized and the back panel is also optimized. This means that the backpack holds you better by the back and that it moves fantastically according to the body's movement. It has become more streamlined in the look and design.

Ortovox is very environmentally conscious and therefore they have used recycled material and PFC-free material. The bag is CO2 neutral and in 2024 Ortovox's entire production is expected to be CO2 neutral

The backpack has a separate compartment for avalanche/safety equipment that is easy to access in case of an accident. It is possible to open the backpack from the back panel, which makes it easy to get hold of your things if you are, for example, ski touring and have a helmet and skis on your back. There are 4 compartments / rooms in the backpack.

There are all kinds of possibilities to attach skis, snowboards, snowshoes, etc. For skis you can use the diagonal and vertical attachment (D-FIX & A-FIX). It is also possible to make the backpack fit more tightly with compression straps, which is smart if it is completely full. This makes it fit even tighter on the body and you get more comfort and flexibility.

In the old version of Ortovox Freerider, the back protector was integrated in the backpack. Now it is made separately so that the backpack can be used on more occasions where you do not need a back splint. If you want to use the backpack for randonee, it can be an advantage to leave the protection at home to make it more comfortable and a little lighter. Inside the bag there is a small pocket where the back rail should be located so that it protects well. We 100% recommend to buy the back rail for the backpack as the FREE RIDE backpack is made to be used together with a back rail for optimal safety. The back rail does not take comfort out of the backpack as it is made of soft material that becomes hard on impact. The Orthovox back rail must be purchased separately. The new CLASP BACK SYSTEM in the back helps to increase comfort and flexibility, it also provides safety but not at the same level as the back rail. The back rail is in principle approved for motorcycle so we recommend to buy both at the same time.

This has a regular fit, which means that it fits normal height / length of back. It fits back lengths between 42-50 cm. To find the length of your back, Ortovox recommends that you measure from the top of the hip to the 7th CERVICAL VERTEBRA (about the neck, it is clear to notice when you bend your neck). Otherwise, we recommend it for people between 170 - 200 cm.
